Chapter 13: The Draft
At the third watch, Shen had a reader in his study for the first time in twelve years.
Mo Chengyan sat on the low stool by the wall, with his back straight and his hands on his knees.
He had asked to sit.
He had asked again before touching the lamp, and again before turning the page of the draft on the corner of the desk.
Shen had begun to find it unreasonable how much he liked being asked.
"No reading over my shoulder."
"I will wait until you have finished." Mo did not move.
"I have not decided how to end it." Shen dipped the brush.
"Then I will wait until you have."
Mo watched the brush.
"In sheet sixty-one, the lantern on the Prince's gate is blue. In sheet eighty-eight it is red. You have never explained why."
Shen's brush stopped.
"A servant changed it."
"Write that in." Mo's face was solemn.
"It is a detail from years ago, Chief Enforcer. Nobody has noticed."
"I noticed." Mo's gaze did not waver.
Shen turned his head, and the corner of his mouth lifted before he could stop it.
"There are two hundred sheets. You can recite them?"
Mo considered it. "I can recite the ones you got wrong."
"I got nothing wrong." Shen lifted his chin.
"Sheet one hundred and twelve. The Prince's cook leaves the court on a Tuesday."
"In sheet one hundred and thirteen he is stirring soup on a Monday."
Shen frowned at the page.
"That is a continuity error."
"It is a small one." Mo's face was grave. "I forgave it."
Shen bent over the page so that the lamp would not show his face.
The brush went on.
The Prince's brother was handed a paper to sign.
