The Eunuch Who Guards the Crown Prince's Bed novel · Chapter 24 of 24
Chapter 24: Whose
The hall emptied in a rustle of silk and murmured apologies.
Bae, the last to go, gave Seok-woo a look of such heavy meaning that Seok-woo nearly asked him to take it back.
Then the doors closed, and the sound of the court dwindled away down the corridors.
The King and Seok-woo stood alone at the foot of the dais, under the painted screen with the arrow hole still in it.
Hyeon took one step down.
The tassels swayed.
"Commander."
"Your Majesty."
"Come here."
Seok-woo came.
Hyeon lifted both hands and took off the crown, with its beads of jade, and put it in Seok-woo's arms.
The weight of it surprised Seok-woo.
Hyeon's hair was damp at the temple, and the white lock clung there.
"I couldn't look at you," Hyeon said, low. "All through the rites. If I had looked, I would have lost my place."
"You didn't."
"I didn't. It took everything I have." He smiled. "Now I intend to be kissed."
Seok-woo set the crown on the Dowager's empty chair, turned, and kissed his King.
Hyeon's mouth was hot and sweet.
It tasted of the ceremonial wine, and under that of something that was only him.
Seok-woo put both hands in the stiff gold of the robe, and Hyeon made a muffled noise against his lips.
"Not here," Hyeon gasped. "Not in front of the screen. My grandmother will haunt us."
"She's alive."
"She'd do it anyway."
"Then where?"
"There is a bed," said Hyeon, "that I slept in only once, as a boy of ten, and hated. I want you to ruin it."
The King's chamber lay behind a long gallery at the back of the hall.
It was larger than the Hall of Quiet Dawn, with a ceiling lacquered red.
The bed was like a small house, hung with yellow silk and strewn with embroidered cushions.
One lamp was lit.
Someone had seen to it, and Seok-woo thought he knew who.
