Chapter 12: Sunday Again
"What is this?" Cecilia said.
She held up the folded page.
Ettore stood by the counter with his shirt open and flour in his hair.
When he saw what she held, all the color went out of his face.
"The baker's daughter," she read. "Cecilia. Twenty-four. It's in your handwriting."
"Yes."
"The second of March. I met Adamo in April."
"Yes."
"You knew my name before he did."
"Cecilia." He took one step and stopped, as if the floor might give way. "I'll tell you all of it. Not here, and not like this. Give me until Sunday."
"Why Sunday?"
"Because after the table, I'll have nothing left to hide behind. I swear to you."
She looked at him for a long moment.
His shirt was ruined and his hands were open at his sides.
She felt the shape of him still inside her, and it was the worst feeling she had ever had.
"Three days," she said.
"Thank you."
"The terms are back. Don't touch me."
"All right."
She put the page in her bag, took the keys off the counter, and walked out into the afternoon without looking at him again.
He drove her home in a silence so heavy that Zia took one look at their faces and put the kettle on without a word.
On Sunday the family came to Pine Street, all twenty-two of them.
Cecilia sat at Ettore's right hand because he pulled the chair out for her and she would not give Simona the satisfaction of an empty seat.
She did not look at him once.
She felt him not looking at her.
Simona had taken a place across from her, in a black dress cut closer than the last one.
