Chapter 12: Eyes on Me
"Say something," said Ilarion.
His fingers were still under her chin.
She made herself look up into his grey eyes, with the white scar slanting across the left one.
She did not say any of the things in her head.
"Kiss me," she said.
"Iseult."
"Please. I'll tell you why, but not now. I need to be in your arms first."
He searched her face for a long time.
Then he took her mouth in his, slow and deep, with a hand at the back of her head, and the whole room went quiet.
She wound her arms around his neck and held on.
He had killed her.
He had done it so gently that she had not felt the second stroke.
He might not have been given a choice.
He had simply walked up the steps.
She did not know why the Emperor had called him back from the border that month.
She did not know what it had cost him, or what he had done afterward.
She knew only that in this life he had not done it yet, and would not.
She would see to that.
And she knew, against every reasonable fear, that the man holding her now was the one she wanted most in the world.
"Bed," she whispered into his mouth.
"It's noon."
"I don't care."
"The guards."
"Let them listen."
His chest shook with a laugh he stifled against her hair.
He walked her back to the bed with his mouth on hers.
He sat down on the edge of it and drew her between his knees.
"Undress me," said Ilarion.
