Chapter 21: The Cathedral
The Cathedral of the Twelve Candles was full to the doors, and nobody was looking at the altar.
They were looking at the windows.
Through the colored glass on the north side, rank on rank of dark coats filled the square, twelve thousand men standing in perfect silence.
The Palace Guard had opened the gates for the vows.
That had been the captain's decision, and he had not asked permission.
Iseult walked up the aisle in the ivory silk with the lacing pinned back into place, on her father's arm.
The Marquess did not look at the Emperor in the front pew.
He looked straight ahead, and his arm trembled under her hand, and he did not let go until the altar.
Ilarion waited there in a plain dark coat with no sword at his hip.
A strip of green velvet was knotted around his left wrist.
She had tied it there that morning, and the priests pretended not to see it.
His grey eyes never left her face.
The vows took four minutes.
His voice was low and level, and when he said her name the whole nave heard it.
