Chapter 22: Wedding Night
The bridal chamber of the palace had a bed as wide as a barge and a canopy of red silk.
No one had slept in it for forty years.
Iseult sat on the edge of the mattress in her wedding gown with the green ribbon in her lap.
Ilarion stood in the middle of the carpet with his hands at his sides.
He had not been told to stand there.
He had simply done it, the moment the door shut, and waited.
"You really want this," she said.
"I want it very much."
"Why?"
"Because I have been giving orders since I was twenty-one, and I have not once been told where to put my hands."
He said it simply, with his scarred face quite calm.
"Tonight I would like to put down the March," said Ilarion. "Everything. Tell me what to do."
Her heart turned over.
She had been the obedient one for so long.
She had thought she would be clumsy at this.
She was not clumsy at all.
"Take off your coat," said Iseult.
He did.
"Slowly."
He slowed.
"Fold it. Put it on the chair."
He folded it, and crossed to the chair, and came back.
"Now the shirt."
He unbuttoned it one button at a time, watching her eyes, and drew it off his shoulders.
His chest was broad and pale and hard with muscle, crossed by scars, and she felt her mouth go dry.
"Boots."
He sat on the bench and pulled them off.
"Trousers. Stand up straight."
He stood naked in the candlelight, with his hands at his sides and his cock rising thick and flushed against his stomach.
He did not cover himself.
He only stood, and breathed, and let her look.
She took her time.
She walked around him, once, with the ribbon trailing from her fingers.
She touched his shoulder as she passed, and the muscle jumped.
"Kneel."
