Chapter 23: North Road

Iseult woke at dawn on the fourth morning of the road with rain on the shutters and a heavy arm across her waist.
For a moment she did not know where she was.
Then she smelled him, smoke and horse and clean linen, and she smiled before she opened her eyes.
Ilarion was awake.
He lay on his side facing her, with his head on his folded arm.
He was looking at her as if he had been doing it for hours.
"Good morning," he said.
"How long have you been watching me?"
"Since the cock crowed. You snore."
"I do not."

His bare skin was hot against hers, and she felt him stir against her stomach.
"We have to be on the road in an hour," she said.

His hand slid down her back and over the curve of her hip, and drew her thigh up across his.
