Chapter 7: Why Him
On the third morning Ilarion cleared his throat at breakfast and put down his spoon.
"It's the third day," he said.
Iseult looked up from her porridge.
She had been hoping he'd forgotten.
"You said I could ask."
"I did."
"How did you know what was under the map in my brother's desk?"
The tower was quiet except for the fire.
She had rehearsed this three times in the bath.
None of the versions could include the scaffold, because if she said she had died and come back, he would send for a physician.
"I had a dream," she said.
"A dream."
"A long one. I was Empress, and I never read what I signed."
Ilarion's face did not change.
"Go on."
"In the dream there were three levies on the Dragon March, over two winters."
"By the end of the second, the north was eating its seed, and your men were eating their horses."
His hand closed slowly on the table.
"The first winter we ate the horses," he said. "In the second, we would have eaten something else."
