Chapter 12: By the Stove
She woke at midnight with her heart going too fast and found the bed empty.
The scarf lay folded on his pillow.
Aoi pulled the quilt around her shoulders and padded barefoot into the kitchen.
He sat on the floor in front of the old iron stove, with the door open and the embers glowing red, in nothing but his trousers.
He did not turn when she came in.
"I could not sleep either," Caelrin said.
"Why not?"
"Because I am happy. It is a very strange feeling. I keep waiting for it to be taken away."
She sat down on the floor beside him.
The stove ticked, and the firelight painted his chest copper and his hair a warm grey.
She leaned her head on his shoulder.
He put his arm around her and drew her into his lap, quilt and all, until she was straddling his thighs, face to face, with the fire at his back.
"I have something to say," he said.
"Say it."
"I have never said it in your language. I will say it first in mine, because I want you to hear what it sounds like."
He took her face in both hands.
He spoke softly, in a long, liquid, rising tongue she did not know.
It sounded like wind in a very old forest.
She did not understand a single word, and she understood all of it.
"That means I love you," Caelrin said. "It means more than that, but that is as close as your language comes."
