Chapter 19: The Porch
The frost came down that night, white and silent, and the porch rail glittered under the stars.
Aoi sat on the old bench with a quilt over her knees and her breath going up in small clouds.
Caelrin came out of the house with his long coat over one arm and a mug of hot cider in each hand.
He gave her one.
She wrapped both palms around it and said nothing, and he sat down beside her and said nothing either.
The valley below them was dark and still.
Far off, one lamp burned in the Lark and Barrow, and she thought of Mirena in her white cap, awake and worrying.
"Four more nights after this one," she said.
"Yes."
"Are you scared?"
"Yes."
He took her cup and set it on the rail with his.
Then he opened his coat and drew her into it, bench and quilt and all.
She was against his chest with the wool wrapped round both of them.
He was warm.
His heart thudded under her cheek, hard and quick.
"I have fought in nineteen battles," he said into her hair. "I was never afraid in one of them. I did not have anything to lose."
She turned her face up.
His eyes were wet and steady in the starlight.
"Now I have everything," said Caelrin. "And it is the most terrible feeling I have ever had."
She kissed him.
She kissed him slowly, so slowly, with the cold on her nose and his mouth hot against hers.
There was nothing hurried in it.
His hand slid beneath the quilt and under her nightgown and spread, wide and warm, on her bare back.
