Chapter 18: Both Names

I drove to the boathouse the next morning in Birdie's yellow hatchback, with the heater broken and my hands white on the wheel.

I was angry at Benedict, who had lied to me for ten weeks to keep me alive.

That is a very hard thing to be angry at.

It doesn't fit anywhere.

Brant was in the yard in a flannel shirt, throwing a stick for a golden retriever the size of a sofa.

The dog saw me and stopped halfway through a leap, with an expression of pure betrayal that I assumed meant joy.

"Biscuit," said Brant. "Sit."

Biscuit did not sit.

Biscuit leaned his full weight on my legs and licked my elbow.

"He likes you."

"He's an anxious dog. He likes everybody."

"He doesn't like Rhinelander."

"You've introduced them?"

"I stood in the driveway while Rhinelander's car went by, and he barked at the bumper."

I started to laugh and then did something worse.

I started to cry.

Brant's face changed.

He crossed the yard, and I was folded into a flannel chest that smelled like cedar.

He said nothing at all until I was done.

"I have to tell you something," I said into his shirt. "And it's going to sound like I've lost my mind."

"I'm a werewolf, Cas. Try me."

So I did.

In the kitchen, with Biscuit's head on my knee and a mug of coffee going cold, I told him all of it.

It took forty minutes.

He got up once, to let Biscuit out, and came back without a word.

I told him what Benedict was, and what he'd done, and what the mark was.

Brant didn't interrupt.

His face went still, then stranger, then still again.

When I got to the part where the bond belonged to Lena, his hand stopped on the table.
