Chapter 22: The Longest Night
By dusk the whole court was dressing for the longest night.
I could hear it through the walls, a hundred doors opening and shutting, and silk dragged over stone.
Hob came to my chamber with my yellow raincoat over his arm, brushed and pressed and smelling of cedar.
"The court's livery, miss," he said, very straight. "Lent for one night, to be given back."
"You're allowed to say it's a gift if you say it's a loan."
"That is exactly what I'm allowed."
"Thank you."
"I've put the Hounds on my kitchen floor," said Hob. "Nobody gets near me without walking over nine of them."
He left me alone with the coat and a pen.
I sat at the little table with one sheet of paper from the back of my notebook.
I wrote to my mum without lying to her for the first time since I'd left.
"Mum. I told you Shropshire. It isn't Shropshire."
"I'm somewhere under a hill, being paid very well to say what's so. I'll tell you the rest in person."
"There's a man here who says exactly what he means, and I can't decide if it's a miracle or a trial."
