Chapter 24: His Bed
For a long moment nobody in the hall made a sound.
Then a lord in the second tier stood up and said, hoarsely, "Majesty. Clause Four."
I turned on my stool.
"My lord," I said. "Go on."
"The King has confessed that he lay with the Witness."
"Has he?" I said. "Where?"
He looked at his boots.
"On a carpet," said somebody at the back.
The hall roared.
It rolled round the tiers of stone and up into the dark of the tree.
Four hundred people laughed at something that was true, for the first time in three hundred years.
I waited for it to run down.
"The Oak has crowned him," I said. "The Oak is older than the Treaty, and it hasn't asked us about Clause Four."
"But since you've raised it, my lord, I have terms."
I stood on the dais in my yellow raincoat, with a letter in my pocket.
I looked at the court I had walked into three weeks ago.
"I will serve a second year and a day, on conditions."
"Clause Four is struck from the Treaty, and nobody will mention it again."
"The wells of Brockley are written in for good, as an act of this court, and not as a price."
"My fee goes to a nurse in Cardiff."
"On Sundays I will walk out through the Door and hand my mother a cup of tea."
