Chapter 23: Home
The town house at the end of the lane was exactly as bare as she remembered.
There was a hall with one lamp, a kitchen with one pot, and a stair.
On the step stood a basket with a cloth over it.
Under the cloth were six pickled eggs and a note in Pippa's bad handwriting.
*For luck. Don't come out till noon.*
Wynne laughed so hard she had to lean on the door.
Tavish unlocked it, took the basket, and carried it in with his dignity entirely intact.
"She's very kind," he said.
"She's very something."
He set the basket on the kitchen table and stood there for a moment with his back to her.
His coat was gone at one shoulder and stiff with old blood at the sleeve.
"Wynne."
"Mm."
"I spoke to the Queen's secretary while you were with the Guild man."
She stopped untying her cloak.
"The Keep has a sergeant who is better at it than I am," Tavish said.
"He can hold it from the walls.
"I ride up once a month and when they send for me."
"You'd leave the Keep?"
