Chapter 12: The Lie

Lorna came to the penthouse at midnight, alone, in a plain grey raincoat with her hair wet.

The doorman called up, and Rhys looked at me.

"It's your choice," he said.

"Send her up."

I waited in the hall outside the study with my arms crossed.

She came out of the elevator slowly, with her purse clutched in front of her, and she stopped when she saw me.

"Willa."

"Say it," I said. "Everything. Or I'll hear you lie."

Her eyes went to my ears, and I saw her understand what the pills had hidden for six years.

She sat down on the hall bench, because her legs would not hold her.

"You were born white," she said.

I didn't move.

"My mother was white. My grandmother was white. It skips a generation, sometimes two. When you were born, I knew by the way the midwife went quiet."

"Then I'm your daughter."

"You are my daughter." Her voice broke. "You have always been my daughter. There was never a swap, never a mistake. That was all Conrad."

My stomach dropped, though I had known it since the lab.

"Conrad is not the Alpha of Black Pine by blood," she said. "The seat passes through my line. He holds it by marriage, and only for as long as there's no white wolf in the family old enough to take it."

"And then I turned nineteen."

"And then you turned nineteen."

She wiped her face with the back of her hand.
