Chapter 22: Owed

Bo looked at me.

"You don't have to," he said.

"I know."

I went anyway.

The room was small and windowless, with a metal table, two chairs, and a deputy just inside the door.

Amelie sat on the far side in her pale blue dress.

They'd already taken her earrings and her hair tie. Her hair hung loose around her face.

Same hair. Same face.

For eighteen years people had looked from her to me and seen one girl.

Now she looked nothing like me.

I sat across from her.

"You came," she said.

"You asked."

She twisted her fingers together on the metal.

"The prosecutor wouldn't tell me," she said. "Does it say what happens to me? In the note?"

"It says somebody dies. It says you drove drunk and killed someone."

"Nobody died."

"No. Dillon's alive. That's the only thing it got wrong, and that's because I kept my hands on him until the ambulance came."

She absorbed that with her chin lifted.

"Everyone always said you'd be fine," she said. "Emery's the strong one. Emery's fine anywhere."
