Chapter 9: The Cake
Jo's POV
She had brought a lemon cake.
I watched her cut it on the kitchen table with a long knife, and the sunlight through the window caught the rings on her hand.
It was seven in the morning, and the two state guards stood against the counter with their coffee and did not look at anyone.
The priest sat at the end of the table with his hands folded and his eyes on the cake.
Teo sat across from me with a plate he had not touched.
I sat with my own hands on my knees under the table, where nobody could see them.
My blouse was buttoned wrong.
I had noticed it in the hall mirror and fixed it, and I did not know if she had seen the first time.
"Eat," Gianna said.
She put a slice in front of me.
"Joanna.
"You look tired.
"The medical evaluation was so long."
"It was a long evening," I said.
"And the doctor?"
"He said the right ear has about twenty percent left.
"He recommended a hearing aid."
"Salvatore refuses."
She said it lightly, with her eyes on her husband.
