Chapter 22: The Vows
Jingmo took the razor.
He held it in his bandaged palm, in the dusk of the Mirror Hall.
Nine hundred versions of himself stood around him, and the Warden's small dry body lay at his feet.
No one spoke.
Not the Three Halls, and not the novices.
Not Yanzhi.
He stood with the old bronze disc still clutched in his arms and his heart going.
He did not say one word, because he had asked Jingmo not to take the vows for him, and he had meant it.
He had not known it would be this hard to keep his mouth shut.
"You all know what I carried," said Jingmo.
He said it to the room.
"I thought I could not put it down until I had been burned three times on the head."
"I thought I had to be good for the rest of my days."
He looked down at the razor. "Last week I asked a fox what he wanted, and he told me he would carry a broom."
Somebody sniffed.
It was the boy with the tooth.
"I was not forgiven by a ceremony."
"I was forgiven in a hot spring by someone with every right to refuse."
"That is the only absolution I believe in."
He turned the razor over.
