Chapter 11: The Night Before
It rained on Sunday night, and the radiator in my bedroom knocked.
He lay on his back in my bed with his hands behind his head.
I sat astride his hips with my hair still wet from the shower.
Neither of us had said what tomorrow was.
His eyes were on the ceiling.
"Say it," I said.
"Say what?"
"Whatever's sitting on your chest. Other than me."
He breathed out through his nose.
"Tomorrow, at moonrise, I want you to lock me in."
I did not move.
"The cellar's empty. The bolts are gone. But the door still locks from the outside, and it's solid oak."
His voice was very even.
"Put me down there with a bottle of water and a blanket. Come and get me at dawn."
"No."
"Anja."
"No."
"There will be a hundred people in that hall. If it goes wrong," he said, and stopped.
"I haven't been near anyone at a moon in fifteen years. I don't know what he'll do."
"He'll do what I tell him."
"He doesn't do what anybody tells him."
"Then he hasn't been told right."
His jaw worked.
I put my hands flat on his chest and leaned down until my face was an inch from his.
"Nobody is putting you in a room you can't leave," I said. "Not tomorrow. Not ever again."
"I'm asking you to."
"I know what you're asking. The answer is still no."
"If it goes wrong, he could hurt someone. You."
"He won't hurt me."
"You don't know that."
"I know what happened in the kitchen."
He went very still.
"What?"
"When I told you to stay with me. Your wolf went quiet like somebody shut a door. You know it did."
I watched his face.
"I say it to myself in the cabin every night," he said. "Alone, out loud, in the dark. Stay with me."
"And?"
"Nothing. It only works in your voice."
His eyes closed.
"I think I know why," he said. "Ingrid left a scanner on the cellar shelf, for company."
