Chapter 18: The Mother
My mother arrived at Eero's cabin at noon on Sunday with a casserole dish in both hands and her purse over her elbow.
She is sixty-two, five foot four, and she wears a wool coat buttoned to the chin in every season.
She stopped on the step and looked up at him.
She had to look a long way.
"You're large," she said.
"Yes, ma'am."
"Well," she said to me. "That is not his fault."
He took the casserole from her.
Inside, she walked round the big room once, with her hands behind her back.
She looked at the wood stove, the claw-foot tub in front of it, the scarred butcher block.
The coat hooks.
"There's a bathtub in the living room," she said.
"It's a cabin," Eero said.
"It's a bathtub."
I looked at the floorboards.
They were still faintly warped from the week.
"Would you like to sit?" he said.
"I would like to know what you are going to do with my daughter."
