Chapter 19: The Second Moon
The second moon came up over Lake Superior at half past four, huge and orange.
A hundred wolves went down to the shore to meet it.
Nobody was chained.
Nobody stood at the cellar door.
The doors of Birchwater stood wide open.
The whole pack poured out across the frozen sand, changing as they ran, fur and bone and joy.
I stood on the rocks above the water in my parka and watched them go.
Eero stood behind me, still a man.
He had his hands in his coat pockets and his eyes on the moon, and they were already gold.
"You're not going with them," I said.
"I'm going with you."
"You could run. I'll be here."
"I know." His voice was low and rough. "I want to be here more."
The wind off the lake was needles.
Out on the ice-skinned water, the moon laid a long copper road.
Down the shore, the first howl went up, thin and clear, and then another.
A chorus, a hundred voices pouring into the sky.
I felt it in my ribs.
I felt it in my feet and in the stones.
Eero took a long breath.
I heard the sound he made in his chest, the one that was not quite a growl.
"He's very close," he said.
"I can tell."
"He wants to say hello to the moon."
"Let him."
"He wants to say hello to you first."
