Chapter 7: What the Wolf Wants
The nest rooms were on the top floor of Birchwater Lodge, under the eaves.
Ingrid had told me the pack called them that because a wolf who is courting builds a bed like a den.
Hers was a joke of a bed, enormous and round, heaped with quilts and wool blankets.
A skylight over it looked straight up at the afternoon sky.
I had slept four hours in my truck.
Eero had followed me all the way to the lodge, and neither of us had said a word since the stairs.
He shut the door.
"You're not going to ask me what that was," I said. "Last night. On the phone."
"I'm going to do it in person."
"Do what?"
"Everything he wanted to hear." His voice dropped. "If you'll let me."
My stomach went hot and liquid.
I took off my fleece.
"Get on the bed," he said.
"That's not how it works."
He stopped.
His face went through confusion, then comprehension, then a slow dark pleasure.
"Please get on the bed," he said.
"Better."
I climbed onto the quilts.
I pulled my sweater off and my jeans after.
I knelt in the middle of the nest in my underwear, with the daylight pouring down on my skin.
It was the first time he had seen me in full light.
He stood at the foot of the bed with his hands hanging at his sides.
"Turn around," I said.
"Which way?"
"I'm turning. You're looking."
I turned on my knees until my back was to him.
I put my hands flat on the quilt and lowered my chest, and I arched my spine.
I heard him stop breathing.
"Anja."
"Take my underwear off, Eero."
He climbed onto the bed.
The whole mattress dipped.
His big hands closed on my hips, hooked my underwear, and drew it slowly down over my thighs and off.
