Chapter 23: The Week

The scan came back Tuesday and it was better than the doctor had feared.

Grade one, a re-aggravation of the old strain, no new tear.

He was on crutches for four days and off them by Saturday.

I drove him home from the imaging center and he sat in my passenger seat with the printout on his knees.

"Grade one," he said.

"Grade one."

"Two weeks."

"Three."

"Two."

"Three and I'm not arguing about it."

He looked out the window.

"I lost us the season," he said.

"You didn't lose anything."

"I put myself in."

"You asked to play and the coach put you in and the whole bench watched you do it."

"That's not the same as being forced."

"No. It's not."

We drove the rest of the way without talking.

At his apartment he got up the stairs slowly and I followed with his bag.

The place was the same. Leather couch, big TV, dishes stacked in the sink.

He sat down and put his leg up on the coffee table.

I sat down next to him.

"The bet," I said.

"What about it."

"The week ended Sunday."

"It ended last Monday."

"It ended Sunday. The way you wrote it."

He turned his head.

"You ended it on your own floor," he said. "You made me finish the rep."

"I did."

"So what's left."

"Nothing. It's done."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"Then I want to pay up."

"You already did."

"No. That was the week. This is the whole bet."

"Logan."

"I'm serious."

He shifted on the couch and got his feet on the floor and turned to face me.

"Whatever you want," he said. "Once. That was the deal."

I sat there looking at him.

The apartment was warm and the light through the window was going gold.

"Then take your shirt off," I said.

He did it. Then his jeans.

I stood up and walked around the coffee table and stopped in front of him.

"Sit on the floor."

He got down on the floor and sat with his back against the couch.
