Chapter 7: The Bar Fight

I got to my car and stood there with my keys in my hand and didn't get in.

Through the window the bar was still loud. Nobody had left.

Then the door opened and Logan came out.

He crossed the street in four steps and stopped in front of me.

"I'm not going back in," he said.

"You have to."

"No."

"Logan."

"I stood up and she said it again and I had nothing, so I walked."

He said it flat, no self-pity in it, and that was worse.

"Say it back to me," I said.

"Say what."

"What she said. Word for word."

He looked at me.

"'There's a girl at the end of this table who's been sleeping with my ex-boyfriend for a week.'"

"Okay."

"That's it?"

"That's it."

"You're not going to yell at me?"

"I'm going to do something else."

I unlocked the car and got in the passenger side and shut the door.

He stood outside for a second. Then he got in the driver's side.

"You're not driving," I said.

"I'm not driving."

We sat there in the dark with the bar light coming through the windshield.

"You had nothing," I said.

"I had nothing."

"Because you were trying to protect me."

"Yeah."

"Stop doing that."

He turned his head.

"Stop trying to protect me in front of your team," I said. "It makes you look like you've got something to hide and it makes me look like I need it."

"I don't know how else to do it."

"Then learn."

"Teach me."

I reached over and took his jaw in my hand and turned his face toward me.

"That's the first honest thing you've said all week," I said.

"Then do something about it."

I kissed him.

He came across the console and I pushed him back with a hand on his chest.

"No," I said. "Not like that."

"Then how."

"Like this."

I got my hand in his hair and pulled his head back and kissed him slow, and he let me.

He put a hand on my waist and I took it off and put it back on the wheel.

"Keep your hands there."

"Dana."

"Keep them there."

He kept them there.

I kissed him for a long time. Down his throat and along his jaw and back to his mouth.
