Chapter 8: Under the Desk
The herald came at noon, a tall thin man in white feathers with a jade measuring rod, and he was early.
Luan was in the Sovereign's study when the guard announced him.
She had come up with the lunch tray, and she was standing behind the black wood desk fixing a cup.
Cangjue was at the desk with his sleeves rolled, signing a stack of grain orders.
He looked up at the guard and then at her.
"Under the desk," he said quietly. "Quickly. Out of his sight."
"Why?"
"The cranes saw you at the north wall with me. If the herald sees a maid at my elbow, he will ask her name."
Luan looked at the desk.
It was a massive thing, carved from a single slab of black wood, with a solid front panel that came down to the floor.
The space beneath it was dark and wide enough for two.
She smiled slowly.
"Of course," she said.
She got down on her knees and crawled under the desk, and pulled the tray in after her.
Cangjue's eyes closed for one second.
"Luan," he said, very low. "What are you thinking?"
"I'm thinking that you have to answer him without moving."
"What?"
"Sit still. Look at the herald. Say nothing you don't mean."
"Luan."
"The door is opening."
It opened.
She heard the rustle of feathers, the click of a rod being laid on the floor, and a smooth, high voice.
"Sovereign Yan. The Jade Court sends greetings and inquiries."
"The Jade Court may send what it likes," said Cangjue. "Sit."
