Chapter 11: Sunday

"No," my aunt said. "Scheisse. With the S sharp. Like a snake."

"Scheisse," said Konrad's daughter, with the S like a snake.

"Beautiful."

"Okay, now Brooklyn," said Dora, from the other end of my aunt's kitchen table. "Repeat after me. Fuhgeddaboudit."

"Fugga-da-boudit."

"She's a natural," Dora said. "I'm adopting her."

"You can't adopt her," Konrad said, passing the potatoes. "She costs too much in shoes."

It was Sunday, two weeks after Dora showed up with her broken suitcase.

She slept on my aunt's sofa now, and smoked on my aunt's balcony, and the two of them fought about everything from coffee to the Pope.

My aunt had made a roast that was mostly black on one side.

I had made my mother's cake, with the butter my aunt said was too much.

Konrad had brought a salad nobody touched and six bottles of beer everybody did.

His daughter sat on two cushions between Dora and my aunt, learning to swear in two languages.

There were six of us around a table built for four.

Nobody had a chair at anybody's right hand.

Everybody just sat where they landed.

"So," Dora said, with her mouth full of cake. "Do you want to know about my brother, or not?"

"Not," I said.

"Okay." She chewed. "He's not sleeping."

"Dora."

"He moved out of Shore Road. He's in the apartment. Your apartment. He hasn't moved one single thing of yours. Your robe is still on the bathroom door. Ma's housekeeper went in to tidy and he threw her out."

"I said not."

"And the wedding's still on." She put her fork down. "He went to Elettra again on Tuesday. In front of her mother. He asked her to let him go. She said he could stand in the church on the thirtieth and do whatever he had the guts to do in front of three hundred people."
