Chapter 9: Ten Years
He came to the bakery two days later at six in the evening, as my boss was turning the sign.
No driver outside.
No car.
He had walked, and his shoes were wet.
My boss looked at him through the glass, then at me.
"Your gangster," she said. "Shall I let him in, or shall I get the rolling pin?"
"Let him in."
She unlocked the door and pointed a floury finger at him.
"Twenty minutes. I'm in the back. I can hear everything."
"Yes, ma'am," Luca said.
I had never heard him call anyone ma'am in my life.
She went into the back and banged a tray very loudly to prove her point.
I kept wiping down the counter.
He stood in the middle of the empty shop with his hands in his coat pockets.
"I called it off," he said. "Monday night. I called Elettra from the hotel."
"And?"
"She said no."
I stopped wiping.
"She said no to being dumped?"
"She said I don't get to send her away twice." He looked at the floor. "She said if I break it, I do it in the church in front of everybody, and I tell them why. All of it."
"All of what?"
He was quiet so long I thought he wasn't going to answer.
Then he pulled out one of the little café chairs by the window and sat in it.
He looked too big for it.
"Ten years ago my father found out Elettra's father had talked to the FBI," he said. "Not much. Enough. In my father's house, that's a death. My mother begged for them. So instead of a death it was a plane. Elettra and her mother, to Palermo, that night, with one bag each."
He turned his hands over and looked at them.
"I drove her to Teterboro. My father made me. She held my hand the whole way. She thought I was coming. She kept saying, 'You're coming after, right? You'll come after?'"
