Chapter 4: Sorry, Honest
Lydia put the roses into my arms before I could decide whether to take them.
"Miranda, I'm so sorry."
Her mascara had run. Her nose was pink.
It was the worst thing about her, how real it looked.
"I was scared for Tristan," she said. "His mother kept telling me you were using him. I should have come to you. Instead I did the stupidest, cruelest thing I've ever done, and I've been sick about it for two days."
"You read my book to two hundred people."
"I know."
"You took it out of my bag."
"I know." Her face crumpled. "I'll tell everyone I was wrong. I'll post it, I'll call every person who was there. Just say you'll let me make it right."
Tristan stood by the open door with his hands in his pockets.
On the stairs, Gus leaned on his cane and cleared his throat.
"Lydia, dear. How long did you have her bag?"
"Gus?"
"At the party. You carried it to the powder room, I'm told. How long were you gone?"
Lydia laughed, a small, wet, charming laugh.
"Oh, a few minutes. The strap was getting caught on the silk."
"A few minutes," Gus repeated. "It must have been a very long strap."
"Grandfather," Tristan said.
"I'm only asking."
I looked at the flowers in my arms. Lydia was the first friend I'd made in that world, and I wanted very badly for her to be telling the truth.
That's the part I'm least proud of.
"Fine," I said. "Tell them you were wrong."
"Thank you." She wrapped her arms around me, roses and all, and her hair smelled like vanilla. "I'll seat you with my friends at the foundation dinner. You'll love them."
