Chapter 12: Three in One Room

Nobody took the coffee.

Daphne stood in the doorway holding one in each hand, and her smile stayed where it was.

"Jo," she said. "You look awful. Did you sleep?"

I did not answer.

Sullivan walked over, took both cups out of her hands and set them on the nearest table.

"Hello, Daphne."

Her smile finally slipped.

"I'm sorry," she said to Braden, not to him. "I didn't know he'd be here. I saw your car outside and I was so frightened."

"Frightened of what?" Braden said.

"Of him. Of what she's told you."

"She hasn't told me anything." He did not look at her. "She hasn't had to."

"Braden."

"Where were you at eleven fifty-one?"

It was a plain question, and he asked it in a plain voice.

I watched her hear it.

"I've answered that," she said. "You know where I was. I told you that night in your mother's guest room."

"Tell me again."

"I was in room seven."

"With him."

"Yes." Her voice thinned. "Please don't make me say it in front of him."

"At eleven fifty-one you left me a message about room four," Braden said. "You told me the door was open and to hurry. You sounded like you were reading a recipe."

"I was terrified."

"You didn't sound terrified."

"People sound strange when they're terrified."

"They do," Sullivan said from the table. "She didn't sound strange. She sounded bored."
