Chapter 13: The Quiet Part

Daphne did not move for the length of one breath.

Then she laughed, a small, tired, rueful sound.

"Jo, honey. Everybody knows there's a quiet part. It's a voicemail."

"It's a hiss," Braden said. "On a speaker it's only a hiss."

"Then you told me."

"I never told you."

"You did, years ago, you were upset." Her eyes went to him, wide and wounded. "You said there was a bit at the end you couldn't make out."

"I said that to no one," he said. "I have never said it to anyone, Daphne. I didn't know there was anything to say."

She looked at Sullivan next.

"Then it's him. He's been whispering in your ear since Sunday."

"I've never heard the thing," Sullivan said. "I wouldn't know it from a phone book."

I watched her face.

It was working fast, and she picked a new story and took it.

"All right," she said. "All right. I'm going to say this once, and I'm going to say it kindly, because I love you both."

She came a step closer to me.

"That recording is seven years old. It's been on a phone in his pocket the whole time. Someone has been in that bar with you all night, with a laptop, and they can make a voice say anything now."

"Who?" I asked.
