Chapter 13: The Barge List
Nobody in the hall moved, and the fire went on cracking.
"Get up," Elior said.
His voice came out thin.
"Please get up, Father.
"You walked a mountain in winter.
"You should not be on your knees to me."
The priest did not move until Sigrun stepped around the chair and took one of his arms.
Teodric took the other.
Between them they lifted him and settled him back into the blankets.
"Bed," Sigrun said firmly.
"A warm one, with a hot stone at his feet and a guard at his door.
"He can say the rest in the morning."
"I have said all of it, Majesty," the old man whispered.
"Then sleep."
Two servants carried him out.
At the doorway he turned his head, and Elior saw his lips move in a blessing.
Then the great hall was empty except for the three of them and the dying fire.
"I will bar the gate and wake nobody," Sigrun said quietly.
"The lords are drunk in their beds.
"Nobody hears this tonight."
She touched Elior's sleeve once and left them.
Elior stood with the ring clenched in his fist.
"Show me the book," he said.
