Chapter 22: The Roof
The roof hatch was in the ceiling above the third-floor landing, and I had never once been through it.
Costa went up the ladder first and held the door open with one arm, and then he reached down and lifted me through by the waist.
"I can climb."
"I know you can."
He set me on the flat tar roof, and the night opened up around us.
The whole of Hampden lay under a clear black sky.
The cold bit my cheeks, and I could see the lights of the mill on the hill and the dark shape of the hospital beyond it.
He had already been up here.
An old green quilt lay spread on the tar by the chimney, with a thermos on it and two mugs.
"You planned this," I said.
"I planned it at three in the afternoon. I've been shaking since."
"Costa."
"Sit."
I sat on the quilt, and he sat down beside me, close enough that his thigh pressed mine, and poured coffee with a hand that wasn't steady.
For a minute he said nothing.
"I told Loretta I'd say it right," he said at last. "I've practiced for four days. I wrote it down."
"You're not allowed to write it down."
"I know. I practiced it in the shower. Out loud."
