Chapter 23: A Door in the Ceiling
By nine, I had a living room full of people and a hole in my floor.
Costa had cut a square four feet by eight in the boards with a circular saw.
It was the most frightening thing I'd ever seen him do.
He did it with the calm of a man defusing a bomb.
The rookie held the other end of the plank.
The captain's brother-in-law, an engineer in a hard hat, crouched at the edge with a flashlight.
"Joist," said the engineer.
"I see it."
"Don't cut the joist."
"I'm not cutting the joist."
"You're thinking about it."
"I'm thinking about it," Costa admitted, and the room laughed.
Shannon had set up a folding chair at the edge of the hole.
She sold coffee out of a thermos for a dollar a cup.
"I'm funding the banister," she announced.
Six women from the choir sat on my couch in their church coats, passing around a plate of cornbread.
Loretta sat by the window with her cane across her lap.
