He unwrapped the paper himself, because my hands wouldn't work.
Inside lay a plain gold ring, thin and bright.
"I bought it in Highlandtown," Costa said. "My mother made me try six."
"Costa."
"Let me say it. I practiced."
I nodded, and the tears were already running.
He knelt on the old grate with his hands on his thighs, and his voice came out in pieces.
"You're the first thing I wanted out loud in a year."
"I'll still leave you notes, if you want them, but I'll hand them over myself."
"Marry me, Molly. I'll say it as loud as you want, every day, for the rest of my life."
I tried to answer, and what came out was a hiccup.
"Yes," I said. "Yes. Yes."
He slid the ring on my finger, and it fit.
He put his forehead against my knee and shook.
Then I pulled him up by the collar of his coveralls and kissed him, plaster dust and all.
I opened the new door, and the living room was dead silent.
Forty faces turned toward us across the hole in the floor.
"Well?" Loretta demanded.
I held up my hand.
