Chapter 26: Fourteen an Hour
I didn't take the application.
Doug held it out a while longer.
Then he lowered it.
"I know," he said. "I know how this looks."
"How did it happen?"
He laughed, a short sound with nothing behind it.
"Carter's lenders. When he went down, they came for everything with a Penrose signature on it. Which was my eight stores." He looked at the dark asphalt. "I'd signed personal guarantees. On all of it. The lake house went in March. My wife's at her sister's in Naples. She says she's thinking."
"And Blair?"
"I don't know where Blair is." He said it flat. "I told her not to come to the house. Then there wasn't a house."

She didn't say anything.
She was looking at Doug's windbreaker, and the hole at the elbow.
"Come back at eight tomorrow," I said. "Staff meeting. We'll see."
He nodded and walked back across Eight Mile.
Frankie watched him go.
"He called Pop a cripple," she said. "On our lot."
