Chapter 10: Seven Words
"Go ahead and vote," I said.
I stood up so fast that my chair rolled back into Jonas's legs.
"Vote on whatever you like."
"I hold sixty percent of this company, and I don't need a seat at this table to use it."
"Shares held by a person who cannot manage her affairs are voted by a guardian," Leif said, patiently, as if explaining to a child.
"That can be arranged."
"By Britta, I suppose."
"By someone who loves you."
I turned toward the other ten.
"My father's brother just told you my father was out of his mind."
"Then he told you my father kept a ledger of the pension money, and a recording, and a bank box."
"Ask yourselves what a confused man was so afraid of."
I picked up the recorder and the dock.
Nobody stopped me.
Nobody said a word as I walked out, with Jonas a half step behind, and the door closed on the sound of Leif beginning to talk in his warm, easy voice.
The elevator lobby was marble and echoed.
I stood in front of the call button, shaking, with my cane tight in my hand.
"Cancer," I said.
"I'm sorry," Jonas said.
"He made me swear."
"I know."
"I'm not angry at you for that."
"You should be."
"I'm angry at everything."
"You'll have to wait your turn."
Heels clicked across the marble.
Lavender.
"Linnea."
Britta stopped beside me.
Her voice had changed.
The silk was gone from it and something flat and tired had taken its place, and for the first time I thought she might actually be grieving.
