Chapter 19: The Run
"The elevators," someone said.
"He's gone to the elevators."
"No," I said.
I was already moving, with Jonas's hand light on my back.
"He hates them since the building stalled with him in it."
"He'll take the fire stairs by the freight door, and he'll cough on every landing."
We went through the boardroom doors into the corridor, and I heard it.
Far ahead and below, a hollow metal door boomed shut.
Then the cough, wet and angry, bouncing off concrete.
"Eighteenth floor," I said.
I took the fire stairs at a run with my cane rattling in my fist and Jonas's feet pounding beside me.
I counted landings by the echo.
Seventeen.
Sixteen.
At the twelfth landing the cough stopped, and I heard two sets of feet instead of one.
"He has someone with him," Jonas said.
"The driver."
"He was waiting in the stairwell."
At the bottom the door to the parking garage banged open, and cold air full of exhaust washed over us.
A car door slammed.
An engine fired and screamed.
