Chapter 20: The Hill House
Mrs. Thornley came up the portico steps with her pearls on and her gloves in her hand.
She took in the whole scene in one look.
Lorna on the top step, sobbing with her hair coming down.
Guests pouring out of the double doors behind us.
Mr. Brightwell with his arm around his wife, and me, in a green dress, at his other side.
"I see," she said.
She did not raise her voice.
"Winifred," said Mr. Brightwell. "I am going to ask you where you got the idea that you could do this to my family."
"I will not discuss a private matter on a hotel porch with the staff looking on."
"If you want to speak to me, you may come to my house, where I can offer a chair."
She turned to her driver.
"Take Lorna to the car."
"Your house," said Joanne. "Gladly."
"I thought you would."
"It isn't your house, Winifred," said Peter.
He had come out behind us, with his jacket over his arm.
His mother looked at him.
"Ask your lawyer what happened to the deed after you signed it to me," he said.
