Chapter 23: On the Record

Iris reached the district attorney's office as Dane was saying it.

She stopped in the glass doorway of the conference room.

He sat at the long table with a legal pad untouched in front of him, across from a prosecutor in a gray suit, and a recorder blinked between them.

"I was on top of her," Dane said. "She said get off. I heard it."

The prosecutor's pen paused.

"Mr. Fairweather, your lawyer has advised you not to speak."

"I fired my lawyer an hour ago." His voice was steady, and his hands were not. "I'd like it recorded in my own words. I was drugged. I know that. I won't use it. I had my hands on her wrists and I didn't stop when she told me to, and I'm not going to say I didn't know what I was doing, because I did."

Nobody spoke.

"The drug is the reason I couldn't stop," Dane said. "It is not the reason it happened. I want that on the record, with my name."

The prosecutor looked up and saw Iris in the doorway.

Dane followed his eyes.

He went white, and then he stood up so fast the chair rocked.

"I told you I wasn't going to ask for anything," he said.

"You're not asking," said Iris.

She came in and sat down at the table, two chairs away from him, and laid her bag on the wood.

"I'm the complainant," she said to the prosecutor. "I want to say something for the recorder as well."

"Of course, Miss Kellaway."

"The charge against Dane Fairweather was based on a report my guardian pushed. Her text messages say Fairweather gets the other half of the bottle. Her son has signed a confession." She kept her eyes on the little red light. "I know what happened to me. I know who planned it, and I know who it was done by, and who sat in the doorway and watched. I'm asking this office to charge the people who did it."

"And Mr. Fairweather?"

"He told you what he did. I heard it. I'd like his statement kept in the file, word for word." Her voice did not shake. "I'm not withdrawing the complaint because he is sorry or because I love him. I'm withdrawing it because the people who drugged us both are in cells, and I'd like the record to say so."
