Chapter 13: Not Yet Sorry

I stood up so fast that my chair went over backward.

My father said my name.

I didn't answer him.

I went out through the garden door with my mother's pearls in my pocket and my hands shaking, and I didn't stop until I reached the south wall.

My mother's roses were out along it, pruned and healthy.

Somebody had kept them alive for seven years.

I heard heels on the gravel behind me.

"Don't," I said.

"You'll want to hear this," Danielle said. "At the altar you asked who dared who."

She stopped three feet away.

The light from the dining room fell yellow across her face.

She wasn't smiling anymore, and without the smile she looked even more like him.

"Nobody dared anybody," she said. "I picked the chapel and I picked the Monday. Preston said yes before I finished the sentence."

"Why?"

"Do you want it in order?"

"I want it in any order that ends."

She gave a short laugh.

"I knew who you were the first night Preston brought you to my apartment," she said. "He said you were a nurse and your father was retired, and I almost dropped the bottle."

"You had his hands, Cecelia. I looked at them all through dinner."

"So you made yourself my friend."

"I made myself useful. You let me in. Turn up crying once a month and people call you family."
