Chapter 5: Wrong Girl

"Who told you?"

"My stepmother. At breakfast. With several adjectives." He looked at the empty chair. "May I?"

Dina kicked the chair out from under the table with her foot before I could answer.

"Sit," she said. "I have questions."

He sat.

Up close, in decent light, he was worse.

Worse for me, I mean.

The heavy brows. The nose somebody should put on a coin. A small white scar through one eyebrow I'd kissed at some point and forgotten.

I hadn't forgotten.

"Dina Radcliffe," Dina said. "Best friend. Society column. I know where every body in this city is buried."

"Rem Beckford."

"I know who you are. How old are you?"

"Thirty-four."

"Ever been married?"

"No."

"Engaged?"

"No."

"Why not? Something wrong with you?"

"Probably." He nodded at me. "She'd know better than I would."

I kicked him under the table.

He didn't even blink.

Dina narrowed her eyes. "Last question. Why did you leave her a credit card like she was a hotel minibar?"

"I had to get my brother to an emergency room. Her coat was still downstairs. She was wearing silk in the rain." He looked at me. "I wanted her to take a cab home."

"I took the bus," I said.

"I heard you snapped it."

"Twice."

The corner of his mouth moved.

Dina looked from his face to mine and sat back with a tiny, evil smile.

"I'm going to the bathroom," she announced. "For a long time."

She took her wine with her.

Then it was just us, and the candle, and the rain on the window.

"You didn't answer my text," he said.

"You didn't ask a question."

"I asked for your name."

"You had my name. You just told it to me."
