Chapter 9: The Glasshouse

The glasshouse stood at the bottom of the palace garden.

At night it glowed faintly green.

Briony had been inside it twice in the game.

Both times the heroine had been alone with a prince.

Tonight she was alone with an assassin.

It was warm and wet in there, and heavy with the smell of oranges and damp earth.

The panes sweated.

Rows of potted trees stood in the dark.

A stone path wound between them toward a bench at the far end.

"We shouldn't be here," Sevrin said.

He said it with his mouth against the nape of her neck.

"Your rota says there's one guard in the yard."

"He walks the garden wall every half hour."

"Then we have twenty minutes."

"We have eighteen."

"You counted."

"I count everything."

She laughed.

It came out soft and breathless, and she turned in his arms and found his mouth in the dark.

Three days had passed since the stable.

Twice the Regent's eyes had found her in a corridor and slid away.

His window opened every night, and every night it was harder to let him leave.

It was never enough.

She had never been so hungry in her life.

He was hungry too, she thought.

He was very quiet about it, as he was about everything.

But his hands shook when he touched her.

"I want something," she said against his lips.

"Say it."

"I want to be against the glass."
