Chapter 15: Boot Off
Trent stopped smiling.
"Cap," he said. "You're not cleared."
"I'm cleared." Henrik came down the hallway one stride at a time, and each stride was slow and a little crooked.
He did not use the wall.
"The doctor took the boot off Saturday morning. Three weeks early. The bone knitted fast."
He stopped beside Trent and looked at the paper in Trent's hand.
"What's that?"
"The athletic director's order."
"Prescott's order is a piece of paper," Henrik said. "This is a door."
He took a key fob from his pocket and pressed it to the reader.
The light went green.
Trent stared at it.
"That's a custodian's master," he said. "You can't..."
"He owes me a favor. Go home, Maddox."
"I'm assistant captain."
"For about one more week."
Trent's juniors looked at each other.
One of them put down his stick bag and went back out through the lot, and the others followed him.
Trent stood alone for three long seconds.
"You're going to regret picking her," he said, and left.
Henrik held the door open.
