Chapter 18: Cold Room

Prescott's office was cold.

The window overlooking the arena roof was open two inches, and the radiator under it had been turned off.

He sat behind his desk in his coat with a pen in his hand.

"Miss Hedlund," he said. "The receipts."

I put the envelope on the blotter.

He didn't open it.

"Three thousand four hundred and eleven," I said. "As of five o'clock."

"A strong week."

"It's more than a week."

"Strength is not arithmetic, Miss Hedlund." He smiled at the pen.

"The roof costs a quarter million, however many people come to see a spin."

His phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen, and for the first time since I'd met him, his face moved.

"Excuse me," he said. "Stay where you are."

He went into the hallway, and the door swung almost shut behind him.

I heard his voice go low and sharp.

I sat very still.

Then I looked at the desk.

Under the envelope, under the edge of his coat, lay a document stapled in the corner.

I turned my head to read it.

It was a contract, forty pages, with a heading in heavy black type.
