Chapter 23: Thin Ice
At 7:58 the hockey team was not in the tunnel.
They stood in a long gray line at the Zamboni gate, on the far side of the ice.
Their sticks were on their shoulders, and the freshman stood at the front.
Henrik had told them one thing, ten minutes before.
"Don't go near the tunnel. Not for any reason. Wait for the cello."
Nobody asked why.
After the hearing, they didn't need to.
The house lights fell.
I skated out alone into the blue and stopped at center ice, with my head bowed and my arm raised.
I heard four thousand people go quiet.
On the box seat rail the cello player drew the first long note, and the skaters came out behind me in slow loops.
Thirty-six of them.
It was the most beautiful minute of my life, and I knew it, because I could feel a man watching me from the dark.
He was not in the tunnel.
He was at the gate, with his hand on the boards, and when I turned in the third bar, I saw his face.
Then I saw the box suite.
Prescott sat at the front of it in his camel coat, with his phone in his hand.
