Chapter 7: Lake Cabin

In the middle of November the league gave the Blizzard a week off, and Doran Beaulieu put me in his truck.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"My cabin."

"You have a cabin?"

"On Lake Erie. Forty minutes. I bought it the year I made captain, and I've slept there nine nights."

"Why did you buy a cabin you don't sleep in?"

"I was waiting for a reason," he said.

I looked out the window so he wouldn't see my face.

The cabin was low and dark, built of cedar logs, with a stone chimney and a porch that faced a gray, restless lake.

Inside, it smelled like cold and new wood.

The kitchen was enormous and empty.

There wasn't a single pot.

"I didn't know what to buy," Doran said. "So I bought nothing."

I laughed until I had to hold the counter.

"Wait here," I said.

I drove into the nearest town for cast iron, butter, flour and a chicken.

I came back to find him on the porch splitting wood with his shirt off in forty-degree air.
