Chapter 10: Plus One

Courtney found me in the equipment room on Friday with a garment bag over her arm and a delighted look on her face.

"There you are! I've been looking everywhere."

"I've been here since five," I said. "I live here now."

"Perfect, because I need a huge favor." She set the bag on the folding table. "The booster dinner is tomorrow night. I'm running coat check, and my volunteer just quit. Would you do it with me?"

"Sure," I said. I was tired of saying no to people who were nice to me.

"You're an angel." She squeezed my arm. "And hey, it's formal, so I brought you something. It's the dress my sister left at my house. You'd look amazing in it."

The bag held a long green dress with thin straps.

It was much nicer than anything I owned.

"I can't take this."

"Don't be silly. It's just sitting in a closet."

I held it up. The color was the exact green of the pine trees outside.

"Mason's going to be there, of course," Courtney said lightly. She leaned against the table and fiddled with the zipper. "It's his big night, after all. Everyone's coming to see him."

"Big night?"

She stopped moving.

"Oh. I just mean he's the captain. The whole team will be there."

She said it so smoothly that I let it go.

"Do you know if he's bringing anyone?" I asked, and tried to sound as if I only wondered.
