Chapter 11: Shrimp

The ballroom at the Hartwell Inn had white tablecloths, a string quartet and a shrimp tower taller than my head.

"You okay?" Mason asked, at the door.

"I'm fine."

I was not fine.

On the walk in, he had given me a small wrist corsage of white roses, and his hand had shaken while he tied it.

[She looks unreal. I can't think. Don't stare.]

[Say something normal.]

"Nice dress," he said.

"You said that in the car."

"It's a nice dress."

I laughed, because if I didn't, I would have started crying.

I kept telling myself it was the dress he was thinking about.

The dress, and the girl he wanted to see in the room.

The booster-club tables stood in a horseshoe around a small stage.

Courtney was waiting at the head of the room in a red gown, and she caught Mason's arm before he'd gotten five steps.

"Captain! There you are. You sit up front with the donors. And Lila..." She smiled at me over his shoulder. "I put you at table nine, by the kitchen. You don't mind? We were short on seats."

"It's fine."

"It is not fine," Mason said.

"It's one dinner," I said quietly. "I'll be where I can watch the coats."

I went to table nine.

It was beside a swinging door, between a donor's elderly mother and a man who talked only about his boat.

From there I could see the head table perfectly.

Courtney in red, laughing with her hand on Mason's sleeve.
