Chapter 16: The Photo
Ha-jun opened the envelope.
Inside were six glossy prints, sharp and clean, taken with a very long lens.
The first showed the parking lot again, from farther back.
The second showed the same kiss from another angle.
The third was the stairwell of the fan-sign hall, with Seung-ho's forearm braced against the wall and Ha-jun pinned against it, his head tipped back.
The other three were worse, because they were smaller moments: a hand on a waist, a forehead against a shoulder, a look.
Across the table, the producer had gone still.
The two brand men stared at the polished wood and not at anyone's face.
"You see," Choi said softly. "I am not an unreasonable man."
Ha-jun laid the prints out in a row, face up.
His fingers did not shake.
He had stood in front of forty thousand people with a worse feeling than this one.
"What do you want, Director?"
"Sign the transfer tonight, at the agreed rate. These stay in my drawer for the rest of your life."
"And if I don't?"
"Then three outlets get them by morning, with a caption." Choi's round face was perfectly kind. "ARCLIGHT's center and his own manager. The clause doesn't need your voice, Ha-jun. It only needs the world to see."
"It needs me to confirm it," Ha-jun said.
"Does it?"
"I read my contract. A photograph is a photograph." He turned the print of the van toward the producer. "I'm not going to say anything about it. Neither is my company."
