Chapter 23: No Dating
The renewal came to eighty-one pages, and Ha-jun read every one of them in Park Mi-sook's office with a pen in his hand.
She sat across the desk with her tea and did not hurry him.
On page forty-four he stopped.
Clause fourteen was there, with its number and its title, and under the title there was nothing at all.
The rest of the page was white.
"Is that a mistake?" he asked.
"No." Park set down her cup. "Starline's lawyers wrote a replacement, and I read it, and I threw it away. You are twenty-four. You will write what you want."
"I can write anything?"
"I will initial anything that doesn't cost the company its building."
Ha-jun looked at the white space.
He uncapped the pen.
He thought of a van on Teheran-ro, a warm hand on his wrist, and a voice that said "Rule one."
Then he wrote, in his neat stage-signature hand:
"No dating. Exception: Moon Seung-ho."
He turned the page around and pushed it across the desk.
Park read it.
She read it again, with her glasses sliding down her nose.
"It's legally absurd," she said.
"It's exactly what I mean."
"I'm told clauses with names in them are a nightmare to enforce."
"It can't be used against anyone. It only says who the exception is."
Park took the pen out of his hand.
She initialed the margin, stamped it with the red company seal, and slid the page back.
"Done," she said. "Go home. It's ten o'clock, and I expect you in the practice room at two tomorrow."
At 1204, the lamp was already on.
Seung-ho stood in the kitchenette in a plain white T-shirt, with no suit, no glasses, and a wooden spoon in his hand.
The rice cooker clicked.
On the counter there was a pan with something in it that was not eggs.
"It's kimchi stew," he said. "The woman downstairs wrote the recipe on my hand. I'm told it can't be ruined."
